June 2021

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Dear Friend,

Greetings from Jhamtse Gatsal Children’s Community! We are thinking of you during these trying times. We send you our love and good wishes for health and happiness. The Community continues to be in lockdown.  Most of our children remain back in their villages per the local Government's mandate and will return to Jhamtse Gatsal based on further guidance from the State.  We are grateful to report that all the children are safe and healthy.

Your unwavering support throughout, and especially during these challenging times, is greatly appreciated and highly impactful. We are pleased to share good news highlighting what your impact looks like. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.  We hope you enjoy our June newsletter, and we hope you stay well.

With gratitude and sincerely yours,

Vasudha Wanchoo

Shout Out To Our 11th Graders!

From left to right: Tsering L., Dawa C., Rinchen N., Srijana S., Tashi P., Lobsang D., Sonam L.

Your support has allowed our fourteen 11th graders to top the Tawang district in the state-level Board exams this year. Seven of our 11th graders scored among the top 10 positions in the district.

The pandemic caused innumerable disruptions in our academic schedule; however, our children persevered through these obstacles and emerged as the top students in the district.

Here are some of their thoughts :

“Why settle for ‘good’ when you can be ‘better’? I will prove myself to be better. There is always hope for improvement.” - Srijana S.

“This is good but I wonder, what if I had put in a little more hard work than I did.” - Sonam L.

“Always hope for something good to happen in the future and never lose hope if it doesn’t happen. Look back into your life and try correcting all the mistakes. Make sure you don’t do it again.” - Rinchen N.

Every Day is Father's Day at Jhamtse Gatsal!

Lobsang Phuntsok is the proud father figure to 100+ beautiful children. The 3 pillars of his parenting are: he wishes for the children to have a kind heart, a healthy body, and an awakening mind.

Gen la speaks very highly of his teachers at the monastery where he was raised. The following are his thoughts on how we can think of a father figure—as someone who loves despite challenges, who can trust children and envision a future for them even when they can’t see it for themselves:

“When I was the most unlovable, they loved me dearly;
When I did not trust myself, they never stopped believing in me;
And when I saw no hope in myself or my life, they saw great potential in me.”

We honor all the fathers, father figures, and educators of life who support their children and learners in their journeys of “unbecoming to becoming.”

Tashi and The Monk Connects With Monks in the Netherlands

We recently heard from a monk at a Benedictine Abbey in the Netherlands, Sint-Adelbertabdij, Egmond-Binnen. He wrote, "In our community we have seen the movie: Tashi and The Monk. Our brothers are very impressed by the beautiful work of Lobsang Phuntsok." With the note, they included a much appreciated donation for the Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community.
