Exploring the Green World
By Anita Kumari, Kindergarten Teacher
Education is a journey of discovery, and for the young Kindergarten minds, every day brings new opportunities to explore the world around them. Recently, our young Kindergarteners embarked on an exciting class activity that revolved around the fascinating world of plants. The immersive experience took them on a journey from classroom videos to hands-on exploration of various plants, trees, and seeds. In this article, I will share about the enriching class activity that allowed these curious minds to witness the magic of plant growth firsthand.
The adventure began with the introduction to the concept of plant growth through engaging videos and catchy songs. Through the videos, these children discovered the life cycle of plants, from seed to tall trees. The videos not only provided valuable information but also ignited their curiosity, setting the stage for the adventure to come.
With their interest, we embarked on an exciting journey to explore different types of plants, trees, seeds, and the reach variety of flora that surrounded us.
We went to the community garden which became their playground for exploration. Here the students had the opportunity to see how plants grow in a real-life setting. They witnessed rows of vegetables, and flowers thriving in the garden and learned about the care and attention needed to nurture these plants. They learned to identify leaves, stems, and flowers, and even got the chance to touch and smell them. It was an immersive experience that brought the theoretical knowledge from the videos to life.
The highlight of this outdoor adventure was visiting the polyhouse, where they were introduced to the concept of controlled environment agriculture. Inside the polyhouse, they observed how different types of plants were grown.
On this journey, they not only saw different plants but also learned about the importance of community gardening. This outdoor activity was an eye-opener for these children.
The learning journey became full circle when the students returned to their classroom, armed with the knowledge they had gained. To put theory into practice. Each student was given a small pot, soil, and seeds. With little help from me, they planted their first-ever seeds with great care and excitement. This hands-on experience allowed them to observe the various stages of plant growth up close, from planting seeds to watching the first leaves sprout. It taught them the practical aspect of plant growth, such as watering, and providing adequate sunlight. It was a thrilling moment for these young gardeners as they nurtured their own little plants.
Every morning, their faces light up with excitement as they eagerly enter the classroom, where they spend time observing the growth of their plant and engaging in spirited discussions about whose plant is thriving better. Each child displays a remarkable amount of care and affection towards their respective plants. Before the classroom doors even open, they eagerly check on their plants through the window, excitedly sharing their progress with friends, siblings, and anyone willing to share in their joy. Witnessing even the slightest growth in their plants from the previous day never fails to fill them with delightful surprises.
This class activity on plant growth for Grade UKG students was not just another lesson but a memorable adventure that ignited their curiosity and love for nature. From videos and songs in the classroom to real-world exploration of plants, trees, and seeds in the community garden and playhouse, these young learners discovered the wonders of the natural world. The holistic approach to education fosters a deep connection with the environment.
